Scaling and root planing: what a deep cleaning really means at Brammeier Family Dental
If a "deep cleaning" has been recommended, know that it's a step beyond your routine hygiene visit. Clinically called scaling and root planing, it targets early-to-moderate gum disease once bacteria and tartar have collected below the gumline, where a standard cleaning simply can't reach. This video walks you through exactly what the procedure involves and why it matters for your long-term oral health.
The name sounds more intimidating than the appointment actually is. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable while, during scaling and root planing, your hygienist uses specialized instruments to lift hardened plaque (tartar) from beneath the gum tissue and then smooth the root surfaces so the gums can reattach.
Left alone, the bacteria behind gum disease keep eating away at the bone that anchors your teeth, and loose teeth or tooth loss can follow. Reaching it at the scaling-and-root-planing stage is a real win: progression stops, and the gum tissue often heals back to a healthy state.
Watch the video before your appointment so there are no surprises if a deep cleaning is on your treatment plan. At Brammeier Family Dental, we usually complete deep cleanings across one or two visits, then schedule more frequent maintenance visits to keep gum disease from coming back.
