Why every parent should consider dental sealants for their kids
The most common spot for childhood cavities is the back teeth, and there's a good reason why. A child's molars have natural pits and grooves across the chewing surface that a toothbrush can't reliably clean. Dental sealants close that gap with a simple, painless coating that's brushed on and lasts for years.
Watch the video to see the application from start to finish. Each tooth takes only a few minutes: it's cleaned and dried, a thin layer of liquid resin is painted into the grooves, and a curing light sets it on the spot. No drilling, no anesthesia, and nothing your child will find uncomfortable.
Children who have sealants get significantly fewer cavities in their back teeth than those who don't, according to the American Dental Association. Each protective layer usually holds up for 5–10 years and can be reapplied when needed. For most kids it ranks among the highest-value preventive treatments we offer, costing far less than the cavities it heads off.
Timing usually follows the molars: the first permanent set comes in around age 6 and the second around age 12, and sealants go on shortly after each. At Brammeier Family Dental, every checkup includes a look at existing sealants, and we let parents know if any need a touch-up.
