Although it is easy to understand the cosmetic benefits of straight teeth, many do not realize the health benefits associated with straightening your teeth. When teeth are in malocclusion or are misaligned, they are more susceptible to bacteria build up, cavities, and periodontal disease. When teeth cannot be cleaned properly, they have an increased risk of mobility and eventual tooth loss. With traditional braces, a small metal bracket is bonded to the front of the tooth.

Your doctor may also offer clear, tooth colored brackets. A stainless steel wire is used to connect the brackets and provide pressure to guide the teeth into the desired position. The alignment of the teeth is accomplished by changing the size and strength of the wire. Elastic bands are placed onto the brackets to hold the wire into place.

Another way to move teeth is to use clear, removable aligners, often called, invisible braces. The aligners are changed every couple of weeks and apply pressure to the teeth until they are moved into the desired position. The aligners are worn most of the day and night and are taken out when you eat, or when you brush and floss. Please consult with your doctor to see if invisible braces are an option for you.

The teeth are able to move by responding to the light continuous pressure applied to them by the wires and brackets or the clear aligners. Cells are produced in front of the tooth called osteoclasts. These special cells break down and reabsorb the bone. Different cells, called osteoblasts, begin to form bone on the other side of the tooth.

It is very important to have meticulous plaque control during orthodontic treatment. Failure to remove plaque around brackets every day can result in permanent white stains on the teeth.
