Your child's growing smile: what to expect at each age
Every parent quietly keeps track of those first teeth, and knowing the typical timeline takes the guesswork out of it. This short video walks through what to expect: when the first baby teeth appear, when the full set is in, when permanent teeth begin to replace them, and when the molars and wisdom teeth finally join the lineup.
No two children are identical, yet the patterns are predictable enough that we can catch problems early. Expect the first baby tooth somewhere between 6 and 12 months, with all 20 primary teeth usually in by age three. Around age six the permanent teeth start to erupt, the back molars leading the way, and most kids have their full adult set by the early teens.
Correcting these problems later is far harder than catching them now, so every well-child visit is a chance to check the timeline. We look for late-erupting teeth, crowding, bite concerns that early orthodontic guidance can address, and habits such as thumb-sucking that can reshape the developing jaw.
Have a question about how your child's smile is developing? Bring it to their next checkup at Brammeier Family Dental, where we enjoy working with kids and talking through what we see at every stage.
