WatchProper Flossing Technique
The flossing technique that actually works
The surfaces between your teeth are exactly where most cavities form and where gum disease begins, and no matter how thoroughly you brush, your toothbrush simply can't reach them. That's what makes flossing every bit as important as brushing. The catch is that flossing the wrong way is almost as ineffective as not flossing at all.
This short video demonstrates the technique we recommend at Brammeier Family Dental. Everything hinges on the "C-shape": rather than snapping the floss straight up and down, curve it around the side of each tooth so it hugs the surface and slips gently under the gumline. Do the same on both sides of every tooth.
Done right, daily flossing clears the plaque that collects between teeth and along the gumline before it has a chance to harden into tartar. That's what separates an easy hygiene visit from the start of gum disease.
Find traditional floss awkward? Ask your hygienist about the alternatives: floss picks, water flossers, and interdental brushes all work well when you use them consistently. Raise it at your next cleaning and we'll help you land on what works for you.
